Designing a Card Game for D’source

Updated: May 12

In our 3rd year of design college in 2020 amidst COVID, my friend and I participated in the Design Challenge by D'Source. I had been looking for side projects to collaborate on with my batchmates, so, this challenge seemed like a good opportunity to create something fun.

Name: D’source Corona Design Challenge x IDC School of Design, IIT Bombay

Category: DCDC-4 Game Design - Card or Board Game on Corona Virus or Covid-19

Partner: Anushka Kubal (@anushka_kubal)

Duration: May 2020 (Online)

Result: Winner

The Challenge (as quoted by the organisers)

Introduction and Problem-setting:

The Coronavirus pandemic, although unfortunate and calamitous in its occurrence, has also thrown open opportunities for the design community. If we take the valuable realisation as history in its making, we are bound to render solutions that are sustainable, rather than short-lived.

The D’Source Corona Design Challenge (DCDC) as an initiative: Against this context we need you to brainstorm and look for opportunities where design can now make a difference. ...challenge in seeking creative, innovative, out-of-the-box solutions.

The Brief:

An innovative game which incorporates the narrative of how to protect oneself from the Corona Virus and capture it in the end.

  • as suited to be played by a family

  • it could include a strategy of learning about safety measures or how to stop the spread of the virus while playing the game (learn and play methods).

The Process

Out of ten identified design problem areas, we took up DCDC-4 – Game Design Card or Board Game on Corona Virus or Covid-19 and followed roughly a double-diamond process:

The Game

  • We created "Role&Set" - a family (social) card game that is based on the ongoing pandemic.

  • It is a creative and innovative game where each player gets assigned a Role at the beginning. The objective of the players should be to make the Sets according to their respective Roles.

  • The players have to make sets while maintaining a draw deck.

  • Through getting assigned different roles, this game will remind players of what different people have to offer and contribute towards the society at such tough times.

Specifications:

  • Contents ○ Pack of Cards [6+104] ▶ 6 Role Cards + 72 (12x6) Duty Cards + 24 Chance Cards + 8 (4x2) Power Cards ○ Game Instruction Manual

  • Card Sizes ○ Role Cards: Mini size: 1.75” x 2.5" ○ Other Cards: Poker size: 2.5” x 3.5"

  • Material: Laminated layered paper (with gloss finish on the backside & matte finish on the front so that the cards don’t stick to each other and is easier to hold in hand and play)

  • Printing Process: Lithography (Plate offsetting) or Gravure (Roller offsetting)

Reflection on experience

Me and Anushka, we both (being Product Designers) put too much time into thinking about the game and realised we came short on the graphics/ visual part of the design. It would've also been nice to invite a third member into the process who has great sense of visual design and learn from them.

But now that I look back at it from 2023, I think back in 2020 our main goal was one, to be part of something bigger than our college course work, two, be part of something that our peers, seniors and juniors were also working towards, and three, like mentioned before: collaboration.

To Thank!

It was great to participate in a challenge that IDC organised in the midst of COVID. Its even greater they continue to make it happen in series. I am also really grateful to have a chance to work on this fun little project with my friend Anushka. She makes everything better!

Thank you for going through this post 🙏
